Give us this day...

“Give Us This day”: The motive for praying for Supply

Matthew 6:9-15

9 In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.
10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors.
13 And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
14 "For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
15 But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Jesus didn’t mince words in the Sermon on the Mount. He wasn’t just sharing wisdom for inspiration—He was laying out a blueprint for surviving the storms of life. As He warns in Matthew 7:24-27, hearing these words without obedient action leads to destruction—not financial ruin, but the collapse of your faith when trials hit.

What Does “Destruction” Really Mean?

Countless believers walk through difficulty, disappointment, and devastation, only to turn bitter and abandon God. Why? They treated faith like an insurance policy:

  • Regular church attendance
  • Tithing in the offering
  • Occasional Bible study or prayer meetings

They expected: “If I’m faithful, God’s got my back—no suffering, no loss, and  perpetual blessing.” But when reality strikes, their shallow “faith” implodes.

A private, intimate relationship with God—Goes beyond a weekly devotional or an inspirational Christian podcast. Check out the lyrics of this old hymn, “In the Garden”:

1. I come to the garden alone, While the dew is still on the roses, And the voice I hear falling on my ear The Son of God discloses.

Refrain: And He walks with me, and He talks with me, And He tells me I am His own; And the joy we share as we tarry there, None other has ever known.

2. He speaks, and the sound of His voice Is so sweet the birds hush their singing, And the melody that He gave to me Within my heart is ringing.

3. I’d stay in the garden with Him, Though the night around me be falling, But He bids me go; through the voice of woe His voice to me is calling.

Jesus prioritizes this intimacy over “hell insurance" mindset. God wants a family of blood-washed, God-honoring saints who abide in Him (John 15). Apart from Him, we can do nothing. No fruit? Pruning awaits.

“Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread”

Jesus places this petition after kingdom priorities:

  1. Know Him as Father.
  2. Hallow His name.
  3. Pray His kingdom and will first—submitting our ambitions fully to His Universal Plan.

Then: “Give us this day our daily bread.” Why? Your body needs fuel to do His good works. Like Israel in the wilderness, God supplies exactly what’s needed for mission:

  • Water from rock (twice!)
  • Manna from heaven (six days a week)
  • Quail for protein
  • Clothes and sandals that didn’t wear out
  • Pillar of fire for warmth/light/protection
  • Pillar of cloud for shade
  • The Law for guidance and order
  • All needs met to possess the Promised Land and birth the Messiah

This isn’t prosperity gospel—it’s daily dependence  upon Him so we can focus upon His  Kingdom purpose.

“Forgive Us Our Debts” (Next week)

Next: We'll talk about the difference between forgiveness and mercy next week.  Something you probably haven considered before. Noting that our forgiveness from God hinges on our forgiving others (v. 14-15). Sometimes "Forgiveness" cannot happen... So What then? If Unforgiveness implodes faith faster than trials, and It’s not optional but Mandatory What do we do when It isn't possible to forgive?!  Check in NEXT WEEK & we'll go there.

For now - Kingdom purposes and the Will of our Father set us up for answered prayer!

Jesus' poignantly suggest there are only two options for us when we consider his sermon on the mount...
